Not Sure How to Build a Scarecrow? We’ve Got You Covered!  One of the most loved traditions leading up to Doddington Carnival is the Scarecrow Competition, where gardens across the village come alive with creativity, humour and imagination.

Every year we see some fantastic entries — from funny characters and clever designs to impressive creations that make people stop and smile as they walk around the village.

But we often hear the same thing from people who are thinking about taking part for the first time:

“I’d love to enter… but I wouldn’t know where to start!”

So this year, we’ve created something to help...

Introducing the “How to Scarecrow” Guide

We’ve put together a simple How to Scarecrow Guide to help anyone who wants to take part in the competition but isn’t quite sure how to build their scarecrow.

The guide covers things like:

• What you can use to build a scarecrow
• Simple ways to create a strong frame
• How to dress and style your scarecrow
• Ideas for making it creative and eye-catching
• Tips for displaying it safely in your garden

Whether you’re building one with the kids, as a family project, or just want to have a bit of fun with something creative, the guide will help you get started.

Remember – It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect!

The most important thing about the scarecrow competition is taking part and having fun.

Some scarecrows are simple, some are elaborate, and some are wonderfully ridiculous — and that’s exactly what makes the village trail so enjoyable.

You don’t need special tools or expensive materials. Many of the best scarecrows are made from things people already have at home.

For Doddington Carnival 2026, the theme is “Celebrations”, so there are plenty of ideas you could run with:

• New Year or fireworks
• Party scenes
• Sporting victories
• Anniversaries or milestones
